Has anyone done Press Release and has it been useful?

I've used pay services a few times (PR Web, PR.com, etc) and noticed increased traffic soon after the release. I think they can be good for business, but I don't use them much because they are pricey.
I believe the free services are a bit less effective. Probably on par with regular article marketing.
