Mobile Phone or Cell Phone Pay-As-You-Go or Roaming from USA?

All of the informaiton I was able to find on this site is several years old, so I'd appreciate any up-to-date information that anyone has regarding cell phone usage in Canada.

I'll be traveling to Alberta and BC this summer, and I will need phone access on occasion. I could always get an international roaming plan on my current phone from the States, which would reduce the exorbitant rates down to simply expensive ones. Or, like many other countries, I could get a SIM card (already have an unlocked GSM phone) and load it up as necessary.

How much are SIM cards? How much does one pay per minute for use of a phone?

Any recommendations about cost/benefit? Carriers?
