CQ61 not charging... why?

Hi all
I have a Compaq CQ61 laptop and it will not charge! I have tried another battery in it and the laptop comes on fine with that whether the charger is plugged in or not, however the laptop will not charge the battery. The little LED light on the power socket lights up and stays on when the charger is plugged in and Ive also checked the DC socket inside the laptop and that seems OK as well. Charger works fine as I tried it with another laptop. Anybody any ideas? Could it be some king of power chip thingy on the motherboard which lets the charger actually charge the battery and power the laptop without the battery in??...??? any help much appreciated. Thanks.
